Neglect of the blog was mostly due to so many uncertainties going into May 7th. 13 weeks of good training was halted by IT band issues and greater trochanter bursitis, which sidelined my running for just short of a month. I’m feeling physically well enough to toe the starting line tomorrow, thanks to an excellent physical therapist and a hefty dose of naproxen. Some things:
No goal time/expectations: They ONLY beauty of the injury is that now I get to spend the course doing more high fives, more hugs, more water stops, and more enjoying of Pittsburgh! Honestly, I have absolutely no idea where my stamina and fitness level are at the moment, irrespective of injuries. How much stamina did I lose with a month off? We’ll call this marathon a minor, self-inflicted experiemnt for #science. I’ll be tickled just to cross that finish line, but in all reality, I have no idea how my hips will hold up, past, say…mile 4.
Family time: My family made it in town last night to enjoy the weekend in Pittsburgh and participate in marathon festivities with me! They all scored some PGH gear, which is a more complicated gift than you might imagine for a Cincinnati-loyal clan. Dad says he’ll use his shirt to start a fire, so.
Training: Taking the injury out of the equation, I had such a good time training this winter. I loved running in the dark, snowy, quiet Pittsburgh morning. I loved meeting you guys and keeping up with your training! I loved group runs with the SCRR each Saturday morning. I loved the challenge of fitting runs around a residency schedule. I love it all.
Expo: It became all too real! Walked the expo hand-in-hand with the yokozuna, who is decidedly the reason I was able to pull off a marathon attempt during residency. A stream of well-cooked meals, a listening ear for my constant running chatter, and sitting with me while I wallowed in injury for a month — here’s to gratitude, and how it turns everything into enough.
Hugs? “If you are losing faith in human nature, go out and watch a marathon”
Corny as all get out, but runners know it’s true. This sport changes you, and literally/metaphorically grows your heart, amirite? I can’t wait to give you guys a big hug on Sunday!
NOW WHAT THE HECK ARE YINZ GUYS WEARING TOMORROW?
